Short-Story Award for New Writers Guidelines:

  • See the first five regular submission guidelines.
  • Open to any writer whose fiction hasn't appeared in a nationally-distributed publication with a circulation over 5000. Held twice yearly, spring and fall.
  • Reading fee is $12 per story. Please be sure the address on your check is correct. Results will be mailed to that address, so please be sure to advise us of address changes. Entrants outside of the US may pay by Visa or MC.
  • First page of story to include your name, address, phone.
  • Please staple (rather than paper clip) your story's pages together.
  • No need for a self-addressed stamped envelope, as materials will not be returned.
  • Write "Short-Story Award for New Writers" on the outside of your envelope.
  • Spring dates: Postmark deadline is March 31. Winners will be telephoned by July 1. Results wil be mailed to all entrants in July.
  • Fall dates: Postmark deadline is September 30. Winners will be telephoned by January 1. Results will be mailed to all entrants in January.
  • 1st-place winner receives $1200, publication in Glimmer Train Stories, and 20 copies of that issue. 2nd/3rd-place: $500/$300, respectively.
  • All entrants receive a copy of the issue in which the winning entry is published and second- and third-place announced.


Every story we publish is unsolicited, and 86% of the stories we accepted last year came to us directly from the writer.
